Safe Passage as your VPN Solution

as VPN | Protect your privacy | Access internet beyond firewall

Safe Passage as Corporate VPN

The only difference between normal Internet usage and using Safe Passage is that your Internet connections can be made from your SSH server, not your PC. Using Safe Passage as a VPN solution simply requires that the SSH server you tunnel through can access your corporate/organization's network.

Safe Passage is a Windows VPN client that can be used with both Windows and UNIX-based networks and firewalls. Simply set up (or have your admin set up) an SSH server running on any port (22, 80, or 443 for example). Safe Passage can tunnel the traffic you choose through your firewall, to an SSH server, and the to hosts on a remote private network. This allows you to safely access corporate resources such as printers, Windows networks, etc. from locations outside of the office. See the graphic below:

Safe Passage as your Personal VPN

Have you ever wanted to securely access your files at home from the office, or vice-versa? By installing the free OpenSSH SSH server on your home/office machine and using Safe Passage to connect and tunnel through it, you can access all of your files, printers and other networked resources on the remote network.

Limitation

The main limitation when using Safe Passage as a VPN solution is that while you can access resources (email, shared folders, etc.,) you can't browse the Windows Network Neighborhood. To access resources you will have to type in the relative location of the resources. For example to access a computer called fileshare behind your firewall using Safe Passage, you would type \\fileshare in the explorer window:

Alternatively, you may use IP addresses (instead of Domain/Windows names) to access those resources.
